Safely Discard Expired Medications at Saint Luke’s South Hospital
Overland Park, KS
10/06/2017 10:47 AM

Patients and the community now have a secure way to dispose of their unused medications, thanks to a MedSafe container at Saint Luke’s South Hospital.

MedSafe is a secure, DEA-compliant drop-off collection container for controlled and non-controlled medications patients no longer need.

Instead of flushing or throwing away unused medications, patients can use MedSafe.

The MedSafe container, located in the Emergency Department at Saint Luke’s South, is available 24/7/365 for individual medication disposal.

Acceptable items to deposit in MedSafe include:

  • Controlled medications (Schedule II-V)
  • Non-controlled medications (prescription, over-the-counter)
  • Liquid medications (no more than 4 oz.)
  • Pet medications

Liquid medications need to be in their original containers, wrapped in a paper towel, and sealed in a plastic bag before being placed in MedSafe. Products should be in their original packaging, or loose pills may be placed in a zipper bag.

Items not allowed include: medical sharps or needles, aerosol containers (e.g. inhalers, spray cans), Schedule I or illicit drugs, batteries, alcohol or hydrogen peroxide, trash, chemicals, durable medical equipment supplies, or inventory from pharmacy/offices.
