Pit Bulls as Targets of Breed Specific Legislation

Bronwen Dickey is a contributing editor at The Oxford American and the author of Pit Bull: The Battle over an American Icon (Alfred A. Knopf, 2016). Her writing has also appeared in Best American Travel Writing 2009, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Virginia Quarterly Review, Newsweek, Outside, Men's Journal, Slate, Garden & Gun, Popular Mechanics, and The San Francisco Chronicle, among other publications. She is the recipient of a Hearst Editorial Excellence Award in reporting, a Lowell Thomas Award in travel journalism, and in 2017 she was a finalist for the National Magazine Award in feature writing.

Brent Toellner is the president and co-founder of the Kansas City Pet Project (KCPP) and author of “KC Dog Blog.” He started working for animals by doing rescue, followed by advocacy work fighting breed-specific legislation. Previously, he was the legislative chair for Kansas City Dog Advocates, a group that focuses on pet-friendly legislation on the local level.

In July 2011, he and several others formed KCPP to bid on the contract to run the Kansas City, Missouri, pound — a place where, for decades, more animals died than were saved. Since KCPP took over in January 2012, adoptions have increased by more than 100 percent. KCPP’s live release rate has exceeded 90 percent for more than two years while remaining an open-admission shelter, making KCPP the third largest open-admission, no-kill shelter in the U.S.

Brent writes a blog (KCDogBlog.com), which shares new information about the fight against breed-specific legislation and the shelter’s ongoing no-kill journey.

Delegating with Purpose

Delegation is a critical skill for leaders in today's "do more with less" business environment. Fewer resources, changing motivations, virtual employees, and global workforces are just a few of the challenges leaders face as they attempt to meet ever-increasing workplace demands. In this course, leaders learn the skills they need to address these challenges, gain the commitment of team members, develop individual skills and abilities, and enhance the overall capability and capacity of their teams and, ultimately, the organization. Leaders learn to identify the tasks they need to delegate, select the most appropriate individuals, assess capabilities and commitment, and plan the delegation discussion including the level of decision-making authority, amount of support, and methods for measuring and monitoring the delegation. This class is part of the Business Leadership Certificate. The on-campus DDI course is approved by HRCI and SHRM for 3.5 hours. $174 (Enter Promo code SBDC for $5 discount)

Thought Patterns for High Performance

WHY ATTEND THIS POWERFUL PROGRAM?

Join us for Thought Patterns for High Performance®. This two-day Leadership Development Workshop provides you with an experiential understanding of how mindset impacts your performance both personally and as a leader.

In today’s world of accelerating change and increasing demands, our ability to handle strategic challenges – with sufficient speed, agility and creativity – is paramount to organizational success. The world is changing at a rate in which basic systems, structures, and cultures built over the past century cannot keep up with current demands. If we don’t change the way we think, we are stuck in yesterday’s performance.

The question now becomes, what are those barriers that are keeping us and our organizations from success? It turns out that a lot of our success has to do with the way that we think – our mindset. As a leader, the key is to think differently – to develop a growth mindset within ourselves and within those we lead.

Building on five decades of high-performance programs, The Pacific Institute’s scientifically-driven and internationally-proven curriculum will provide you with the tools to develop an effective leadership mindset to take your organization to new levels of achievement. This can’t-miss leadership development workshop focuses on the following:

  • Address individual and organizational habits of thought which impact individual, team and organizational performance.

  • Learn how organizational health impacts organizational achievement.

  • Uncover areas where ineffective thinking may be creating inefficiencies, causing employees to disengage, and limiting you and your organization from reaching its full potential.

  • Understand the psychology behind the habits, attitudes, beliefs, and expectations that shape adaptive, engaged and high-performance cultures.

Event Keynote Speaker: Will Shields, proud Nebraska Cornhusker and Pro Football Hall of Famer with the Kansas City Chiefs.

“It is a great program. You have to experience it firsthand and it’s worth your time. It’s what you need to do, not only to lead others and your organization but to help you be a better person in all aspects of your life, period. Start with you.”
